A test may measure one or more properties of a specific material or product. After many years of work by countless engineers & technicians in the polymer industry, it was necessary to establish test criteria's to qualify and quantify certain grades of polymers and products.

Throughout the years, many tests have been established and enhanced to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of incoming plastic compounds and/or products. To make tests more meaningful, the polymer industry incorporated universities and independent programs to better educate plastics professionals, which are enhanced annually.

ASTM is one body that offers committee meetings, which the polymer professional's could become a member of to revise a standard or offer new testing standards.

The measurement of a specific property can greatly enhance the quality of a production company. The test results from lot-to-lot testing can also establish a baseline for a molding or extrusion company, which benefits the company and the end-user. In addition, the test results may be used to trace possible material discrepancies when lot-to-lot testing is performed.

Melt Flow Rate is one test that is used to qualify in-coming materials and can produce repeatable results for accepting or rejecting materials. This test is used by Injection Molders, Extrusion, Pipe and Fitting manufacturers and suppliers of raw resins.

FT-IR (Infrared) is another test that is widely used for verification of polymers and/or contaminates. Although the test unit is somewhat expensive for such companies to absorb, the results achieved from the spectra can be used for possible customer discrepancies.

Please browse our Test Lists to obtain more information regarding common tests used in our industry. We have provided links for each testing category that explain, in a more simplified format, the type of testing that would be required for resins and end products.
