Izod Impact (ASTM D 256):
What is a Notched Izod Impact Test?
Notched Izod Impact is a test of how impact resistant a polymer will be. This is useful information when the application is for high impact performance. A sample is place in the clamping zone so that it is cantilevered upward with the notch facing the direction of impact. The pendulum is released and the force required to break the specimen is calculated from the height the pendulum reaches the follow-through. These Notched Izod Impact test methods cover the determination of the resistance of plastics to "standardized" pendulum-type hammers, mounted in "standardized" machines, in breaking standard specimens with one pendulum swing. The Notched Izod Impact standard tests for these test methods require specimens made with a milled notch. In Notched Izod Impact Test Methods A, C, and D the notch produces a stress concentration that increases the probability of a brittle, rather than a ductile, fracture. In test Notched Izod Impact Method E, the impact resistance is obtained breakage by flexural shock as indicated by the energy extracted from by reversing the notched specimen 180 in the clamping vise. The results of all Notched Izod Impact test methods are reported in terms of energy absorbed per unit of specimen width or per unit of cross- sectional area under the notch. The Izod Impact test is a measurement from energy used to break a notch in the specimens. It's usually calculated in units of ft./lb.-in. and is tested at room, cold or elevated temperatures. The Izod factor is useful in comparing various types of resins and/or compounds. In comparing one plastic with another, the Izod test should not be considered the absolute strength value, because the sensitivity of some materials may produce erroneous results. Nylons, Polycarbonates and Acetal material are known to be sensitive-notch materials. The Izod test may indicate the need for revising of the mold for sharp edges for corners that would have an adverse effect on the strength behavior of the molded part. Specimens: 1/8" thick x 1/2" wide x 2-1/2" long.
